Rotary-Musicals For Change And The Environment.

Education And Stage - Hand in Hand

Our stage works combine captivating art with urgent messages. We support clubs, schools, and communities worldwide in embedding environmental awareness through engaging theater projects.

A musical work for clean oceans that specifically raises awareness of plastic waste and the protection of marine habitats.

Every minute, a shipping container full of rubbish is dumped in the ocean. There, huge garbage whirlpools have formed in the ocean currents, creating toxic death zones where all life has died. Plastic waste does not disappear; it simply breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. Ultimately, microplastics also harm life on land.

This must come to an end by 2050 at the latest! The oceans are not a final repository for our plastic waste!

We must refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle, and find a much better way to dispose of plastic.

This is why Ralf Hardenberg of the Rotary Club Nürnberg Connect wrote the play 'Schluss mit Plastik' (No More Plastic), which premiered at Theater Mummpitz in Nuremberg in July 2024 and the musical Nuremberg Tiergarten (Zoo) in March 2025.

The play depicts the vibrant underwater world and a family named Hempel who live with vast amounts of plastic waste in their apartment. Enter Heinrich Dreckweg, whose company, Ruckzuck-Dreckweg, employs a garbage girl named Isa to pick up rubbish and throw it into the sea. However, Nele, the youngest daughter of the Hempel family, follows them and confronts them, saying, "Stop now! The sea is dying!" Nele and Isa will demonstrate to children and their friends. Three people from the year 2050 appear and report that they have succeeded in getting rid of all the rubbish. Life has returned to the oceans. Back in the present, the children start collecting the rubbish while the adults admonish them. The turtles breathe a sigh of relief — life goes on.

Robert Eilers, a composer from the Rotary Club Vechta, created the music for this play. Eighteen songs were created, professionally recorded and sung in a Hanover recording studio. The children sing them, creating an intense resonance in people.

No more plastic in the sea! This is the message and goal of the musical.

The performances will touch people and change their attitudes. Hopefully, they will also change their behaviour.

But the future in our musical has already shown that it works.

The thrilling musical about the energy transition, resource use, and the collective path toward a sustainable future.

Background 1: The Moonrat In the year 2023, the species Podogymnura intermedia was scientifically introduced. These animals are also called "moonrats" or "hairy hedgehogs." They live in the highlands of the island of Mindanao, inhabiting mountain forests. Their diet consists of beetles, centipedes, and snails. Yet hardly discovered, they are already critically endangered due to climate change. As of now, they remain largely unstudied.

Background 2: Hamburg Airport In July 2023, climate activists entered the secure area of Hamburg Airport and glued themselves in immediate proximity to the runways. Air traffic was paralyzed for over four hours. During this time, a total of 60,000 people were waiting to depart or land. In July 2023, a wildfire broke out in the Apollona region on Rhodes, rapidly expanding into one of the largest fires ever to affect the island. Thousands of people had to be evacuated. Afterten days, the fires were brought under control. Tour operators resumed their flights, though avoiding the burned areas. The cause of the fires was a combination of climate change—which led to drought and extreme heat—negligence, and arson.

Background 3: Dante's Inferno It describes the writer's journey through Hell. Above the gate to Hell stands the inscription: "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." Hell leads down through nine concentric circles to the center of the Earth. These are: Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and finally Treachery. The ninth circle of Hell is a large frozen lake in whose ice the traitors are imprisoned. They are guilty of betraying family ties, community ties, guests, and God. Just as they denied all human bonds, they are bound to the unforgiving ice.
